POTENTIAL OF THE INDUSTRIAL INTERNET OF THINGS (IIOT)

POTENTIAL OF THE INDUSTRIAL INTERNET OF THINGS (IIOT)

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is a subset of the so-called Internet of Things (IoT), that is the set of technologies that allows you to connect any type of object of daily experience to the Internet, making it acquire its own identity in the digital world .

The IIoT combines this concept in the industrial field and connects people, products and processes to power digital transformation: in fact, using Industrial IoT platforms, companies connect, monitor, analyze and exploit data in new ways.
The collection of information in the IIoT originates from machinery, industrial equipment, production management systems and devices: from small environmental sensors to more complex industrial robots.
The methodologies and software technologies that make up the IIoT are the most advanced: machine learning and cognitive computing, big-data analysis, cloud and edge computing, advanced robotics. In this context, where everything is connected, cyber security methodologies are the basis for guaranteeing the security and continuity of service over time.

Let's see in practice some examples of current and future IIoT technologies and concepts.

Digital twin: These are digital replicas of physical systems. They are used to test and understand how the systems and products that a company intends to make will behave. For this purpose, digital, virtual environments and simulations are used. By studying the behavior of the twin it is possible to understand and predict the behavior of the real counterpart and thus make the best choices a priori (what-if analysis).

Intelligent Edge: (or Edge computing)it defines the place where data is generated, interpreted, aggregated and addressed. In practice, the cloud is decentralized, through the use of local computational resources, physically closer to the data generated and disconnected from the cloud infrastructure. In this way, the flexibility of acquiring data from heterogeneous sources is combined with the possibility of structuring, aggregating data before sending them to the cloud; fundamental step for the subsequent analysis phase.

Predictive maintenance: this is a type of maintenance that includes machines or components equipped with sensors that collect and transmit data and then analyze it and store it in a database. Through the collected data it is possible to synthesize a "signature" of the component when it operates in optimal conditions. The wear of the component over time leads to a change in its "signature" and therefore to a prediction of future malfunction. Thanks to this technology, it is therefore possible to maximize the use of components without losing the flexibility to plan maintenance.

An example of redesign, declined according to the dictates of the connected factory, is the case of "laboratory" systems, which are created to test and optimize production recipes.

IPREL Progetti can provide complete IIoT solutions to companies: from software platforms to hardware design, integrating consultancy, business analytics, process redesign in a digital key, integration between systems to optimize and reduce production costs.
An example of redesign, declined according to the dictates of the connected factory, is the case of "laboratory" systems, which are created to test and optimize production recipes.
The IPREL Progetti team is able to make new generation machinery communicate with older ones through the necessary hardware adaptations and the required protocols, implementing data exchange software with the supervisor.
The analysis and processing of the data (analog and digital) collected by the supervisor generate the best product recipe that can be used in the line for the maximum possible yield.

Here are some advantages that a production activity can derive from the IIoT:

IMPROVE PRODUCTION

The first step to improve something is to measure and have objective and updated data. Through the use of Industrial IoT solutions it is possible to obtain production data in real time directly from the plant, in this way it will be possible to make the right decisions to keep production efficient.

IMPROVEMENT OF QUALITY

Through specialized sensors, aimed at controlling and optimizing the quality of production, the safety and scalability of operations relating to products, assistance and plants are increased.
Among the indirect benefits of this approach are the increase in the quality of assistance and the quality of the final product.

In essence, IIoT is a new paradigm that will change the definition of IT-OT convergence, inserting itself as the architecture of the production system. The development and diffusion of IIoT technology will be incremental and will be part of a long-term trend, but the opportunity can already be seized today with the help of companies such as IPREL Progetti.

Technology is advancing at a rapid pace, it is a stimulating moment for the world of industry and it would be useful to know how to take advantage of the potential that derives from it: the companies that will be the first to adopt these devices and these new approaches will conquer the leading position in their respective sectors and will change the perspective of production.
